Testing an iPhone for dead pixels is slightly different from testing anything else, for three reasons: every iPhone since the X uses OLED, which fails dark rather than bright; True Tone and Night Shift continuously alter what the panel displays; and Apple has its own way of handling pixel complaints. Turn off everything that changes the display before you start. In Settings › Display & Brightness, disable True Tone and Night Shift, and switch off Auto-Brightness in Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size. Then set brightness high manually.
Hold the phone at your normal distance first, then closer. At over 450 pixels per inch a single failed sub-pixel is genuinely tiny, so take your time and scan in bands rather than staring at the middle.
Most reported iPhone pixel faults are not pixel faults. Work through these before anything else:
The reliable discriminator is viewing angle. Anything sitting above the panel — dirt, a protector defect — appears to shift slightly against the image as you tilt the phone. A genuine pixel fault is locked to one point and never moves.
Almost always dead rather than stuck, and that follows directly from the panel. Every iPhone from the X onward uses OLED, where each sub-pixel makes its own light. When one fails it stops emitting and goes dark. There is no backlight behind it to leak, so the bright stuck-pixel failure barely happens.
Older LCD models — the iPhone 8, SE and XR — behave the opposite way, and on those a stuck pixel is genuinely worth attempting.
Burn-in is a separate matter and more likely than either over a phone’s life: a faint ghost of the status bar, the keyboard or a frequently used app. That is uneven wear rather than a failure, and it cannot be repaired. Pixel faults on OLED covers the distinction properly.
If it is genuinely stuck — a coloured dot visible on black, most likely on an older LCD model — the flashing method is worth one attempt. It risks nothing.
Set Auto-Lock to Never in Settings › Display & Brightness, plug the phone in, and leave the fixer running over the fault for at least an hour. Overnight is the reasonable second attempt. If nothing has changed by morning, nothing will — and on an OLED iPhone, a dead pixel will not respond at all, because there is no power reaching it to work with.
Two things to avoid firmly. Do not press on the screen. The pressure method is dangerous on any OLED, and on an iPhone the display is bonded to the glass with the digitiser between — you risk a permanent mark, a spreading cluster or a cracked panel, and you will have converted a warranty question into accidental damage. Do not install a pixel-fixer app. They do nothing a full-screen pattern in Safari does not already do, and the App Store versions are mostly advert vehicles.
It depends almost entirely on timing.
Within the return window — 14 days for most direct purchases — you can generally return the phone without arguing about thresholds at all. This is by far the easiest route, and it is the reason to test a new iPhone the day it arrives, before the case goes on and before a screen protector is applied.
Within the warranty period, a confirmed display defect is covered. Apple assesses pixel faults case by case rather than publishing a public threshold, and in practice a clearly visible dead pixel on a premium phone is usually taken seriously. Book a Genius Bar appointment or start a support case, and be ready to demonstrate it.
If the phone has been dropped or exposed to liquid, expect the claim to be treated as accidental damage rather than a defect, which changes what it costs.
Before you go in: photograph the fault on a white background, since on black it is invisible and the photo proves nothing; note where it sits; confirm it survives a restart; and remove the screen protector, because that is the first thing a technician will check.
